Camp Raven: Summer Camps

Camp Raven

Camp Raven is for students entering 1st through 5th grade in the fall of 2018 (unless noted differently in the camp description).

There are two different camps each week. A morning camp from 8:30-11:30 a.m. AND an afternoon camp from 12:30-3:30 p.m.

Students staying for both camps are invited to bring their lunch and enjoy a supervised lunch/recess break from 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Lunch will NOT be provided for campers.

Please select below the week(s) your child will be attending. You can sign up for as few or as many as you like – and you can always come back to sign up for more later! Please submit one form per child.

  • Campers should bring a water bottle and snack with them each day.
  • Campers should wear clothes that are comfortable and easy to move around in, including closed toed shoes that are suitable for running and/or playing on the playground.
  • Weather permitting, campers will also spend some time outside each day. Send sunscreen and clothing appropriate for outdoors (i.e. hats or visors).

June 4th – 8th Morning Session, 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Project Runway – Summit Edition
Instructor: Mrs. Brandie Maddox, Upper School Language Arts teacher

*For students entering 3rd grade and up in Fall 2017

From frumpy to fabulous, outdated to outstanding, awful to awesome! Campers will be introduced to sewing, crafting, and design skills through the challenge of Project Runway, Summit Style. Students will complete a variety of challenges, like creating paper outfits and transforming t-shirts to up-cycling thrift store finds. Campers will gather new skills, put them to use, and walk the runway to share their creations.

June 4th – 8th Afternoon Session, 12:30 to 3:30 p.m.
Lights, Camera, Action!
Instructor: Mrs. Marissa Bradley, Kindergarten teacher

We will explore the fundamentals of storytelling and learn how to create our own original movies using stop-motion animation. Each student will also have the opportunity to star in a silent film, a music video, or both! Bring your movie star grin and let your creativity go wild!

June 11th – 15th Morning Session, 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.
The Art of Storytelling: Fairy Tales and Fables
Instructor: Mrs. Lisa Murphy, Art Teacher

Bring stories to life with art, music, poetry, puppetry and dramatic play. Explore different art forms to express stories and ideas. Engage the artist within you through the Arts. Learn to express your feelings and bring stories to life.

June 11th – 15th Afternoon Session, 12:30 to 3:30 p.m.
Historical Fiction: Write and Illustrate a Book
Instructor: Mrs. Lisa Murphy, Art Teacher

Explore literature, pick a time period in history and transport your characters back in time. Research historical facts to support your writing and illustrations.

June 18th – 22nd Morning Session, 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Professor Powers, Detective Camp
Instructor: Rob Powers, Professor Powers & Summit Upper School Science Teacher

*Price is $150 for this camp.

A VIA (Very Important Artifact) has been stolen from the Dickerson Park Zoo! Although the thief has been apprehended by the police department, the VIA has yet to be found. Campers will follow clues left behind by the culprit using forensics science with an escape room twist to solve the case! Cost for this camp is $150 per child and includes a week’s worth of activities, multiple take-home projects, and a t-shirt. (8:30 am to 11:30 am, June 18-22 for ages 5-11)

June 18th – 22nd Afternoon Session, 12:30 to 3:30 p.m.
Professor Powers, Arcade Engineering Camp
Instructor: Rob Powers, Professor Powers & Summit Upper School Science Teacher

*Price is $150 for this camp.

Everybody loves to play games, but we think making them is the most fun of all! Using STEM concepts, campers will complete multiple arcade-style games made out of everyday materials to keep. Skills learned from these projects will be used to build a full-size functioning 1980’s style cabinet arcade game! Cost for this camp is $150 per child and includes a week’s worth of activities, multiple take-home projects, and a t-shirt. (12:30 pm to 3:30 pm, June 18-22 for ages 5-11)

June 25th – 29th Morning Session, 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Dinosaurs Rock: Can You Dig It?
Instructor: Mrs. Lisa Murphy, Summit Art Teacher

Discover paleontology, create art projects and learn more about the various types of dinosaurs. Discover caves, rocks and fossils. Dig for fossils and take home your treasures.

June 25th – 29th Afternoon Session, 12:30 to 3:30 p.m.
Critter Camp: Zoology
Instructor: Mrs. Lisa Murphy, Summit Art Teacher

Explore animal adaptations, environmental connections, and ecosystems of birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals. We will utilize The Summit’s BIG BACKYARD at our new campus for outdoor exploration.

July 9th – 13th Morning Session, 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Party Around the World
Instructor: Mrs. Lisa Murphy, Summit Art Teacher

Learn about the history of celebrations from different cultures around the globe. This multicultural global study will explore art, music, dance, and customs along with culinary delights.

July 9th – 13th Afternoon Session, 12:30 to 3:30 p.m.
Costumes/Wearable Art
Instructor: Mrs. Lisa Murphy, Summit Art Teacher

Study fashions from different time periods in history. Create masks, jewelry, hats and clothes from many cultures around the world. Learn about the art of batik, macrame, weaving, tie dye and more. *The class will culminate with a fashion show.

July 16th – 20th Morning Session, 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Morning – Full STEAM Ahead
Instructor: Mrs. Lisa Murphy, Summit Art Teacher

Study the historical importance of inventions from various time periods and then create your own.Use critical thinking, problem-solving and a lot of imagination to come up with new inventions. You never know you could be the next Leonardo Da Vinci, Thomas Edison or Nikola Tesla. Students will learn the importance of Science Technology Engineering Art and Math skills (STEAM).

July 16th – 20th Afternoon Session, 12:30 to 3:30 p.m.
Cartoons, Comics and Super Heroes
Instructor: Mrs. Lisa Murphy, Summit Art Teacher

If you love cartoons you will love this class. We will research the history of some of the most famous cartoon characters, super heroes and comic book characters. You will get a chance to read and watch some cartoons. Then learn how to create your own cartoon characters, comic strips and super heroes.

July 23rd – 27th Morning Session, 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Gaming Camp
Instructor: Miss Amy Maas, Communications Officer

There are board games, ball games, card games, electronic games, dance games, and even water games! Experience all these games and more with Miss Amy and her special guests during Gaming Camp!

July 23rd – 27th Afternoon Session, 12:30 to 3:30 p.m.
Hand Lettering for Kids
Instructor: Mrs. Marissa Bradley, Kindergarten Teacher

Create your own hand-lettered wooden sign from start to finish as Mrs. Bradley teaches you how to sand, distress, stain, paint, and plan your masterpiece! We will also learn and practice general hand-lettering techniques and explore several mediums throughout the week.

Junior Camp Raven

For students entering Beginners, PreKindergarten, and Kindergarten in the fall of 2018.

All junior camps are Monday through Friday, from 8:30 – 11:30 a.m.

  • All campers must be potty-trained.
  • Campers should bring a water bottle and snack with them each day.
  • Campers should wear clothes that are comfortable and easy to move around in, including closed toed shoes that are suitable for running and/or playing on the playground.
  • Weather permitting, campers will also spend some time outside each day. Send sunscreen and clothing appropriate for outdoors (i.e. hats or visors).

Color Camp

Join Mrs. Bradley for a week full of color-themed exploration and fun! Each day a new color will come to life as we learn and play together in this art-inspired and totally rainbow worthy week.

June 11-15
Fairy Tale Camp
Instructor: Mrs. Shannon Wallace, Summit PreK Teacher Aide

Each fun-filled day will explore a different classic or modern fairy tale. There will be activities designed around each story exploring art, math and science and will appeal to both boys and girls!

June 18-22
African Safari
Instructor: Senora Cassandra Raven, Summit Spanish Teacher

With binoculars in hand, we’ll venture through the plains of Africa, focusing on three key elements: traveling, wildlife and culture. We’re not “lion,” it’s going to be a wild adventure!

June 25-29
Under the Sea
Instructor: Senora Cassandra Raven, Summit Spanish Teacher

Junior explorers will be engaged in activities that help them to understand why Earth is sometimes known as the “water planet”. We will learn about Earth’s oceans and the creatures that live in these wondrous places. We will also see how the oceans provide people with many different kinds of food and resources and how our oceans are an essential part of our global ecosystem.

All About Bugs

Come explore the world of creepy, crawlies. Each day will be filled with buggy activities for even the most squeamish, learning about creatures with too many legs!

July 16-20
Ahoy, Mateys!

Join us on this high seas adventure of pirate inspired activities! Plan to “walk the plank” and plunge into a week of fun!

July 23-27
Rockin’ Ravens
Instructor: Mrs. Marissa Bradley, Summit Kindergarten Teacher

In this geology themed camp, we will learn about rocks and minerals, paint, hide, and find rocks, make fossils, and “rock out” with dance parties throughout the week!

Senior Camp Raven

Senior Camp Raven is the summer program at The Summit Preparatory School. These camps provide a fun and stimulating way for your child to continue learning over the summer break. Each camp is themed to a different topic and encompasses several subject areas, from science and math to art and sports. Campers will have fun while learning and making new friends!

Camps are only $110 per weekly session and include a Camp Raven t-shirt (one shirt per camper). Camp space is limited and your child’s spot will be held when full payment is received.
